president hawkinson weekend address to ku campus community in response to social injustice and need for change
dear kutztown university community,
it has been five days since we shared our university statement rejecting social injustices in our nation.
after hearing from our students and alumni, i understand that many are hurting. i understand that our statement was not enough. yes, kutztown university does reject all forms of racism, sexism, bigotry, brutality and discrimination. kutztown university also stands behind its students of color. and yes, kutztown university believes black lives matter.
i also understand while we have made efforts to fight against social injustice, there is still a lot of work to do. words are not enough. we need to proactively seek out the concerns of our students, faculty and staff and develop actions to make kutztown university even better. as your president, i am committed to put new actions in place and see them through. i won’t stop until we see change.
many members of the university community will participate in the peace, love, kutztown march for solidarity on sunday. the university is very supportive of the organizers of this event, and many of our leaders will participate. on monday, our bias response task force (www.laquigua.com/biasresponse) will meet to discuss and begin to create actions. i will ask the task force, as a part of its efforts, to seek additional feedback from our students and our broader community about their concerns and ideas.
campus leaders also provided statements this past week which were not distributed as widely across campus and social media. the links below will lead you to these posts.
while we will be working here on campus this summer to create a plan of action, we will report on our new initiatives when we come together, face-to-face, in august. until then, please stay safe, healthy and strong.
